Our first stop on this journey the Lutheran understanding of Justification, and the dynamics of sin and grace.
The word, dynamic, reminds us that there is a process to justification that involves constant change and activity.
We are born children of a fallen humanity, but through Christ and Baptism, we are reborn children of God.
As Lutherans, we believe that the Word of God functions as both Law and Gospel. When the Word of God acts as Law, it convicts us of our sin and reveals our sin to us. It acts as a mirror; showing us our need for a Savior and calling us to repentance.
Through repentance, we encounter the Word of God as Gospel. It assures us that our sins are forgiven by Christ’s death and resurrection.
And this process of dying to sin and rising with Christ, is known as justification. We are justified through the death and resurrection of Christ.
We are justified through our own death and resurrection in Baptism.
And as the author states, we are justified as we repeat this pattern of conversion every Sunday as we die and rise with Christ through repentance and the forgiveness of sins.
