Since being called to Salem Lutheran Church, the oldest church in downtown Toledo in 2015, Pastor Mike Hanck began working with the youth who came to the church for social services. At that time the group had five main youth. These students formed the backbone of every project around the church that we tackled. While others were more transient and sporadic in their attendance, these five faithfully showed up.
One of those students, India (name changed for privacy), was always a favorite in the congregation and amongst our partnering organizations. This was because she had a strong personality, was funny, and was a strong participant. During the pandemic, Pastor Mike lost track of her. She and her family had moved to another neighborhood and eventually lost their home. India dropped out of school and lived with friends. India began coming around more as she realized she needed to find a new way for herself. Reflecting on her time here, she thought she might come back as a start. By then, we had prepared the top floor of our parish house for the young ladies. Safe in the parish house, India was able to start anew.
Now, the parish house is the temporary refuge for two young adults from our area who need the community of Salem to reorient and to have sanctuary. Remarkably, they’ve chosen to center themselves through painting. Canvases dominate their living room and dining room. This is certainly a time of re-creating. This is a small example of what Salem is about. Jesus walks with us all, and we walk with others with Jesus. Pastor Mike gives thanks to churches like St. Mark’s for walking with them as they walk with neighbors in need.
