Some recent stories from Wood County Area Ministries (WAM)
St. Mark’s and several local churches are passionate about helping households who find themselves in a temporary crisis. Wood County Area Ministries is an organization that is run by volunteers, housed at St. Mark’s, and supported solely on donations from churches and individuals.
Recently a young mother with two young children was referred to WAM by The Cocoon Shelter. The mother, who is a survivor of domestic violence, was in need of help with her utility bill so that they could remain in their home. The advocate at The Cocoon requested that WAM partner with them so that this bill could be paid. The mother was exceedingly pleased and relieved. WAM is privileged to partner with area agencies to assist our neighbors who are experiencing a crisis.

Since funding is voluntary, WAM volunteers usually refer applicants to other agencies that might have greater funding first. One of our volunteers referred an applicant (who WAM has assisted in the past) to JFS. WAM was made aware that Job and Family Services has funding to assist people who do not have children. This new benefit came about during COVID. The applicant called JFS and received assistance from them. This applicant immediately called WAM with thanksgiving for the referral. He wasn’t aware of JFS assistance and was glad to know this. Through the years, WAM volunteers become familiar with other agencies’ services. This is what makes WAM and its volunteers such an important part of the social services network in Wood County.

This past summer a man and his wife moved from New Jersey to Ohio due to the high cost of living in NJ. Amtrak lost their luggage which held his wife’s credit card. This couple then had to use their cash to pay for a motel until their luggage was returned to them. They ran out of cash and asked WAM for assistance in paying for their room. Upon verification of this man’s Amtrak ticket, future employment and residence in Wood County WAM was able to pay for a few nights. Area agencies are bound by government agencies’ regulations. WAM’s policies are less stringent which allows for this type of assistance.
WAM is a blessing for so many in Wood County who find themselves in tough times. We are blessed to be part of this important outreach organization!
